Awakening in the Desert

The smallest dragon rises to free his stone-bound kin and reclaim the Dragon Realms.

This entry chronicles the opening event of the original Spyro the Dragon, where Spyro—already awake and active—begins his adventure in the Artisans home world. Often misremembered by fans as 'Awakening in the Desert' due to the dusty, arid tones of the early environment, this moment actually marks the start of Spyro's journey to free his fellow dragons, who have been turned to stone by Gnasty Gnorc.

Lore & Background

In the original game, the dragons of the Dragon Realms were turned to stone by the villain Gnasty Gnorc, not reduced to eggs. Spyro was already awake and active at the start, and there is no canonical century-long hibernation. The eggs referenced in later games are a separate plot point; here, Spyro's mission is to free the petrified dragons and defeat Gnasty Gnorc.

In Their Own Story

Dust motes danced in the single beam of light piercing the darkness. Spyro stretched wings that had not moved in a century, his purple scales catching the glow. The air smelled of dry earth and old stone. A buzzing sound grew louder until a small green dragonfly hovered before him, chirping urgently.

Reader's Guide

The timeline begins with Spyro stirring from hibernation after exactly one hundred years have passed since the Gnorcs took over. He exits his cave to find Dragon Valley largely abandoned by adult dragons.

Sparx appears immediately to explain that the other dragons are trapped inside eggs hidden across various worlds. This revelation drives Spyro out of the valley and into the wider realm.

His initial goal is to rescue these eggs, which leads him through grassy fields, haunted tombs, and icy peaks. This awakening event serves as the catalyst for the entire original trilogy's narrative arc.
